Jeff Stein and Paul Gazzola
Artists -in-Residence (performance)
25 August - 19th September
The Australian performance makers, Jeff Stein and Paul Gazzola, share an expansive history of practice throughout Australia andinternationally in the production of site-specific and theatre based works. They are currently working on a new collaborative project "Overlay" that investigates the relationship between architecture and the body as both functional and fictional sites of negotiation.
They will present 15 -minute exposes of their work as a way of introducing themselves and in the following week will give a short presentation of the work generated so far.
Jeff Stein is a current recipient of an Australia Council Fellowship (Inter-Arts, 07-08), where he is developing a series of performances based on the texts of Walter Benjamin and the children's theatre work of Company Raffaello Sanzio (Italy). Alongside this he is directing a collaborative dance/theatre piece based of the life and work of Jean Genet, titled Loving Captive that was shown in development at the Carriageworks, Sydney in Jan 2008. He was a founding member of Sydney based, Gravity Feed Performance Ensemble, creating large scale architectural and site specific works where movement, objects, sound, light and the audience are equal partners. He has a long history of coordinating and curating festivals and events such as the 15th Birthday Party at Bundanon Trust (08), the 06/07 Great Escape Festival, Cockatoo Island Festival ('05), LIVEBAIT Festival, Bondi Beach ('04) and currently the 2008 Viva La Gong Festival, Wollongong.
Paul Gazzola's interdisciplinary practice operates at the interface of art, architecture, performance and theory. Originally trained as a carpenter, he has a B.A. in Performance, works as a Feldenkrais practitioner and in 2004 commenced studies in architecture, The culmination of these varied inquiries, each exploring the connection/intervention between the body and the built form provide a unique platform of knowledge in his working life.
Since 1988 he has presented his work in festivals throughout Europe and Australia as well as on various collaborations with artists such as Jim Hughes, Xavier Le Roy, Meg Stuart and Tino Seghal and the groups Les Ballets C de la B and Lone Twin. In 2006 he was an Asialink Artist in Residence at Future University, Hakodate, Japan researching into the areas of artificial intelligence, multi-agent systems and evolutionary robots.
