Uow Graphic Design students
helping local youth

3rd year Faculty of Creative Arts Graphic Design student, Kylie Morrow, is lending a hand to Year 11 students from Warrawong High School who will be visiting the University of Wollongong on the 30th June, 2008 to take part in a special half day Graphic Design Workshop arranged by the School of Art & Design.

As part of an annual event, these high school students research, write, edit and design articles that will be published in a local youth magazine.

This workshop will assist the students in their last stages of putting the magazine together. The layout and design will be the central focus of this half day workshop and will give students access to the latest computer technology and industry standard graphic design software.

“It’s really important that young people are given access to university equipment and specialised skills. It’s fantastic that local young professional students are lending a hand, it helps the high school students realise that they too can enter university and strive for a great career. We’re grateful that the UOW Creative Arts Faculty are keen to establish strong community ties” said Melissa Abu-Gazaleh, who works as a Youth Development Worker at the Port Kembla Youth Project.

The magazine project; a collaboration between Port Kembla Youth Project and Illawarra Ethnic Communities Council, has existed for over 20 years providing opportunities for young people in the area to develop their literacy and multi media skills while giving them a voice and an avenue for youth expression.
