Headlands

Poetry Night #2

Vaudeville, spoken word, true crime fiction and footy make an unholy alliance when poets converge on the Headlands Hotel for the second poetry night on Friday April 18th.

Esteemed local poet and University of Wollongong lecturer, Alan Wearne will be launching his new collection of poems, The Australian Popular Songbook, and Melbourne Poet, Alistair Stewart will be talking footy and crime.

Keeping the poets in line will be MC, Wollongong play write, Van Badham who will be introducing the poetry boy band The Bracket Creeps, musician Mahri Autumn and an open mic session.

This is the second time the event, sponsored by the University of Wollongong and the South Coast Writers Centre has been held at Headlands Hotel.

Organiser, Susan Angel, from the School of Journalism and Creative Writing at University of Wollongong said it was time for local poets to find a home:

“There’s lots of great talent in the Illawarra and this is a chance to show the poets off in the northern suburbs.”

“This night is a great chance to mix it all up: the serious, semi serious and downright funny. It’s also a chance for locals to get up on the open mic.”

“The last poetry night in November was packed so we thought we would create a local tradition and keep it going when we can, throughout the year. Everyone knows the Headlands Hotel so it’s a perfect venue.”
