Archived News Items: November 2004 University of Wollongong honours student Clare Cochrane has designed UOW in Dubai's new mace, to be used for the Dubai graduation ceremonies commencing next week (Monday 29 November). The mace, made of glass, mild steel and gold, has been designed to represent sand dunes, falcon wings and a dome. The mace took six weeks to create, with the help of Creative Arts Technical Officer Didier Balez who was responsible for the metalwork and forging, and Elke Wilkens who was the glass artist for the project. The State Library of New South Wales has approached Visual Arts Lecturer Sue Blanchfield for permission to archive the website created for her Tracking Cloth Symposium (Friday 26th - Sunday 28th March 2004). The collection of papers presented at the symposium is considered to have 'state significance' and is of 'cultural value' as it documents the Australian textile heritage.
Tracking Cloth examined the hybridisation of textiles in contemporary Australian practice with a focus on the influences from cultures other than ones own, through the interface of travel, migration and trade. Practitioners, researchers and students were invited to the symposium to expand the dialogue surrounding the Tracking Cloth exhibition which was at the Wollongong City Gallery on during March, 2004. > See the website or contact Sue Blanchfield
FCA students showcase three years of artwork. Years of hard work and creative dedication went on display (Friday 12 November) when 80 University of Wollongong's School of Art and Design students opened a diverse exhibition of visual art and graphic design to the public. The Graduation Exhibition entitled They Went That Way is a celebration of works including oil paintings, sculptural pieces, digitally composed prints and multimedia productions from third year Creative Arts students. In Adelaide: Glenn Barkley will be opening the exhibition 'Home Sweet Home -Works from the Peter Fay Collection' at Flinders University Art Museum in Adelaide (SA). Glenn Barkley is co-curator of the exhibition with Dr Deborah Hart, the senior Curator for Australian Painting and Sculture at the National Gallery of Australia (and Alumni UOW). The exhibition opens Thursday 9th December and runs until 13th February 2005. In Braidwood: Glenn has also had a paper selected for presentation and publication at the inaugural 'Two Fires Festival' in Braidwood in 2005. The Paper entitled 'Collecting Activism - thinking about art collecting and its role in politics and activism' looks at the role that collecting institutions play in maintaining the cultural and material heritage of contemporary political activism. On the Airwaves: Glenn was featured on the Awaye program ABC Radio National on Friday 26th November, where he spoke of the development of the University's outstanding Aboriginal collection with an emphasis on prints. Awaye is on at 1pm Fridays and repeated at 6pm on Saturdays. In Sydney the frequency for Radio National is 576 am and in Wollongong it is 1431am.
 The Bellambi Safe Streets Project was officially launched by the Honourable Member for Keira, David Campbell, Sunday 19th September at the Green Box Open Space (Rothery Street, Bellambi). Artwork and installations reflecting the culture and community spirit of Bellambi, are now a permanent fixture in the space, which will be maintained by the community. Artists involved with the project: Didier Balez (FCA Staff), Kim Williams (FCA graduate), Ron Watt (current FCA student), and Sam Newstead and Lauren Brown.
 Congratulations to third year Performance student Alison Robertson, who was successful in receiving an award/scholarship to the value of $6000, to enable her to complete further study in Britain. The award comes from BBM (formerly Big Brother Movement) whose aim is to preserve Australia's historic links with Britain by providing travel assistance for students in 4 major categories: Music, Sport, Technical and Dancing. Alison intends to base herself in London (from late December) after accepting her award at State Parliament House in Sydney on the 8th November at an official ceremony. Lecturer and artist Jacky Redgate received confirmation that the Visual Arts/Craft Board of the Australia Council has approved a grant application to create new photographic work for exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Congratulations Jacky. University of Wollongong Creative Arts honours graduate, Scott Borg, chosen worldwide as one of only three classical guitarists to be offered a place to study at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York for graduate studies, has now been offered a scholarship to Yale University in the US. The Coordinator of Visual Arts, Sue Blanchfield has been selected to exhibit her "By design-made in Australia" work at the national textile survey exhibition, the Tamworth Fibre Textile Biennial which opens in September at the Tamworth Gallery and tours Australia for two years. She has also been selected to exhibit in the International Triennial of Tapestry, Lodz '04 in Poland, opening May 24 -Oct 31 (the works represent all facets of the fibre/textile practice, not exclusively tapestry) > more information from Sue
