The School of Art and Design, in partnership with the Biennale of Sydney invites you to participate in the Australian visit of Peggy Phelan - a leading theorist in the arts and humanities in America. Her visit to the University of Wollongong consists of a public lecture and a seminar.

JELLE VAN DEN BERG is a painter and a lecturer at the UOW Faculty of Creatve Arts. He has been a member of the artist collectives ZEBRA (since 1979) and DE LUI (since 1981) in The Netherlands and Union Street Gallery in Sydney. He exhibited with Mori Gallery from 1986-1994, then with Stella Downer Fine Art, Sydney and Galerie Hoogenbosch, Netherlands. He lectures in painting at University of Wollongong.
 
Michael Andrews, a Creative Writing/Law student from the Faculty of Creative Arts has written a play which is being performed in London Monday June 14th at the Red Lion Theatre. A short (10 minute) comic epic called "F*** you Up", the play is directed by Van Badham, (Creative Arts Graduate and international playwright) and the cast includes another graduate, Ed Nelson.
Michael submitted the play as part of assignment last year at the UOW. It was considered such a strong piece that when a slot became available the the Old Red Lion Theatre, Van Badham (who is currently working in the UK) volunteered to direct it. The professional cast agreed it was too good a play to pass up and is also performing for free. Congratulations Michael!
 

The School of Music and Drama presents Berzerk Baroque, directed by one of Australia's most experienced opera directors: John Wregg. This "Drama with Music" is spiced with humour, intrigue, abundant talent and glorious music. As Project #5 in the series CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ART PROJECTS SA 2004, the CACSA will present the second of three exhibitions, surveying the work of Australian artist and FCA Lecturer Jacky Redgate. Following the launch of the Survey in April with the first exhibition of early photo series, the second Survey exhibition will present a number of major three-dimensional bodies of work, including several Untitled series.

Faces & Spaces Exhibition in the Long Gallery from 1st June - 25th June (Opens 3rd June at 12:30 ).
The school of Art and Design invites you to an exhibition of recent works from its third year students of visual art. Faces and Spaces presents the work of talented students from across the painting, textiles and sculpture majors. The result of this collaboration is a exciting and diverse showcase of work – including watercolours, landscapes, photography, painting, drawing, portraiture, digital media, sculpture and much more. The GDNM and Writing Collaboration project was held Thursday 3rd June in Rm 107, 1.30pm – 6.00pm. Writing and Graphic Design UG students presented results of their collaborative projects developed this session with Merlinda, Grant and Marius. (Jane Ulman who was also involved in the projects returned from Sydney to participate).

 

'Secret Doorway' - on each evening of Thurs 3rd June and Fri 4th June at 6:30pm at the Faculty of Creative Arts, there will be 6 performed monologues by student writer/performers. The event will begin by the audience meeting at the FCA reception area and then the performances will take place in various studios in the building. The monologues themselves disclose the secret preoccupations of a widely diverse set of characters, from a pregnant ex-junkie to a religiously inspired murderer. The performances are free and all are welcome.

City Moon's New Production: Eleven Parts of Feeling will be performed at the Bankstown Town Hall, 25th, 26th, 27th June. It is based on and has inspiration from, the poem of the same name, by well known contemporary Vietnamese poet, Nguyen Quang Thieu. The cast includes students from the Faculty of Creative Arts, UOW and Uni of Western Sydney and is performed in both english and vietnamese. The production is dedicated to the loving memory of Bruce Keller (the cofounder and coartistic director of Citymoon). Bookings: 9793 8324
 
Results from the RIBG Pool Funding allocations: Amanda Lawson, Greg Schiemer, Brogan Bunt, David Blackall, Merlinda Bobis, Jon Cockburn, Gregor Cullen, Grant Ellmers, Marius Foley and Penny Harris were successful in their application for the New Media Exhibition Facility. Value: $32,735.
 
During the Sydney Writers Festival last month.. Alan Wearne was invited to appear on a panel and speak about 'verse novel'. Alan was also the subject of a very large article in the Age (May 22nd), in the Poetry review section. His book The Lovemakers II: Money and Nothing was reviewed by Ivor Indyk.
 
First Class Honours graduate Zoe Steen is the recipient of University Medal for 2004, for her work and research in Performance Studies. Congratulations Zoe! Zoe was interviewed in the "After My Degree' website at the start of 2003.

TIDE - a magazine showcasing the work of student and young writers was launched on Friday (28th May) 5:30pm, at the University of Wollongong/FCA. TIDE (edit spelt backwards) is the work of 3rd year creative writing students from the School of Journalism and Creative Writing, under the direction of Dr Shady Cosgrove.

While on the subject of Shady...she was recently involved in the exhibition at the Wollongong City Gallery, Imaging the Illawarra: 25 Takes. She was one of the 25 local writers who took part in this event.
Shady has also won a Faculty Teaching award as part of the VC's Teaching Award.

 
Patricia Li Tian Chung is an expert in the art of Gu-Zheng (Chinese Classical Harp), and she is currently located in Wollongong and offering tuition in playing this type of harp at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music. Contact number: 4228 1122.
