Peggy Phelan visits the University of Wollongong for a Public lecture and Seminar
The School of Art & Design, Faculty of Creative Arts, in partnership with the Biennale of Sydney, invites you to participate in the Australian visit of:
Peggy Phelan
Ann O'Day Maples Chair in the Arts at Stanford University
Peggy Phelan is one of the leading theorists in the arts and humanities in America today. After 17 years at New York University's prestigious Tisch School of the Arts, she took up the Ann O'Day Maples chair in the arts at Stanford University in 2002. Among her books are Unmarked: The Politics of Performance (1993), Mourning Sex: Performing Public Memories (1997), Art and Feminism (2001), Acting Out: Feminist Performances (co-edited with Lynda Hart, 1993) and the forthcoming Death Rehearsals: the Performances of Andy Warhol and Ronald Reagan.
Her visit to the university consists of a public lecture and a seminar and represents a great opportunity to hear and interact with an internationally renowned scholar.

Seeing Double: Photography and 9/11
Creative Arts building 25, room 128
Seminar: An opportunity for an indepth discussion on areas of live culture, performance, visual culture, feminism and aesthetics. The seminar will focus on Phelan's seminal essay, "The Ontology of Performance" (from Unmarked), and a recent interview in which she reflects on themes and topics 'at the heart of her writing and practice...for Phelan most of these themes touch on mourning, death and love'.
