designer's comment: Seed is a multi-purpose vessel that functions as a vase, hydroponic planter or simply as a sculptural element for the table. Constructed from glass or ceramic, the design exploits a formal interplay of textures while the simple ovoid form, with three separate recesses, alludes to the fundamentally organic nature of its purpose.

UOW Postgraduate student exhibits at 2004 Milan Spring SalonUniversity of Wollongong MCA (research) student from the Faculty of Creative Arts, Graeme Hindmarsh, was selected as a finalist from a field of 2630 designers and institutions from 96 countries in the 2004 Macef International Design Award. The theme of the competition, "H2O on the table", required participants to design innovative objects for the table that contained water and culminated in an exhibition of the finalist's designs held at the prestigious Spring Salon in Milan, Italy. Hindmarsh's entry, Seed, a table-top hydroponic garden, was among 70 "outstanding designs" shortlisted by a panel of distinguished international judges and was displayed at the award exhibition. From the catwalks to cutting-edge furniture, Milan is internationally recognized as one of the key fashion and design centres in the world. Several times each year, designers, manufacturers and buyers from around the globe descend on the city to view the latest and most innovative trends and products from established and emerging design houses in an expo the size of six city blocks. Hindmarsh said, "It was a great honor to be selected as a finalist for such a prestigious award and to have my work shown at a major international design event. Almost every prominent designer in the world today exhibits at the Milan Salons so it was quite an invigorating and inspiring experience rubbing shoulders with contemporary design's most elite practitioners."
