Faculty of Creative Arts: DESIGN WEEK

Design Week is a Faculty of Creative Arts event initiated to showcase the Graphic Design and New Media program within the School of Art & Design.  It commences on Monday 13 March and kicks off with a bang with the launch of the Faculties new design space.  The growth of the design program highlights the increasing interest in this field of study as students prepare for a creative career in the age of technology.

Lynchburg Exchange Exhibition

Following the launch will be the opening of the Lynchburg Exchange Exhibition.  This is an exciting new student exchange between 2nd and 3rd year design students from Australia and America.  The Exhibition of design work from students of the Lynchburg College, Virginia USA will be opened at 1.30pm by Dr Woody Greenberg from Lynchburg College.  All are welcome to attend. The exhibition will run from Monday 13 March to Friday 17 March, 2006.

Metropolis - the Michael Organ Collection

The afternoon culminates with the opening of the Design Week feature exhibit - a collection of film memorabilia, which highlights the impressive design achievements of a bygone era.

"The production and design elements of Fritz Lang's classic 1927 German silent film Metropolis continue to influence modern-day filmmakers", said Michael Organ, whose personal collection of related movie posters and ephemera is on display at the Faculty of Creative Arts, University of Wollongong.

The collection incorporates promotional material, and publications which are variants on Thea von Harbou’s original Metropolis novel.  Themes featured in this material include: the robot head, Evil Maria, the cityscape, workers, technology, 1920s film advertisement design, photomontage and poster design. The material covers both the 1927-8 release as well as the 1984 revival.

"The production and design elements of Fritz Lang's classic 1927 German silent film Metropolis continue to influence modern-day filmmakers", said Michael Organ, "George Lucas used Lang's robot as the basis for Star Wars' 3PO, whilst the cityscapes which are such an intergral part of Ridley Scott's Bladerunner pay direct homage to those seen in Metropolis."

The exhibition will run from Monday 13 March to Friday 24 March 2006. 

Admission to all events on Monday 13 March, are free refreshments will be provided.
