Laptop Specifications
Below you will find information about laptop or PC specifications as they relate to your degree/ major.
You can purchase Macs at education prices through the UOW Mac reseller. You need to contact them directly.
Bachelor of Creative Arts, Graphic Design:
The Graphic Design program is strongly Mac based. However the key software (Adobe Creative Suite) runs identically on both Mac and PC platforms so it really does not matter what you choose. A laptop is useful so that you can bring all of your work to uni, study on the train, etc. The other option is a home desktop system. Then just bring all of your work to uni on a portable USB hard-drive - all the file formats are platform neutral.
Here are some key basic specs:
- current processor (dual core is fine on PC)
- minimum of 2Gb or Ram - preferably 4Gb or so
- 500 Gb hard drive or larger
- Firewire input (for video)
- dedicated Graphics card (256 Mb upwards)
- as large a monitor as you can manage (min 15 inch on laptop, 22 inch on desktop)
Bachelor of Digital Media:
In terms of the UOW portion of the degree, it doesn’t matter what platform you use. Our lab has a mix of PCs and Macs and we are hoping that Linux will be available soon. You'll find, however, that the TAFE (digital video and animation) subjects will be run exclusively in Mac labs, so you may find it best to purchase a Mac.
