Understanding Mine Subsidence and its Community Impacts |
ONE DAY WORKSHOP
University of Wollongong
Saturday, 3 September 2005 |
Longwall mining has recently become synonymous with subsidence and damage to the environment and land use. One of the significant challenges faced by the underground coal mining industry today is the competing demands for maximum resource recovery and minimum subsidence impact on safety, the community, the environment and land use. Ground movement within a subsidence trough can result in damage to buildings, roadways, bridges, railroads, underground pipelines and utilities, and practically any other structure or feature that may be present. The flow of streams may be altered or disrupted, and surface cracks may occur, particularly near the edges of the trough.
This one-day workshop addresses the latest research on related practical subsidence issues including:
- Subsidence impacts induced by valley closure , infrastructure
- Legislative and statutory requirements
- Developing risk based subsidence management plan and remediation strategies
- Pre-mining measurements
- Case studies
The subsidence workshop is organised by the Illawarra Branch of The AusIMM and is managed by University of Wollongong UniCentre Conference Management. UniCentre recognises the importance of working with other Wollongong organisations to provide the best conference and facility services.
