Invitation

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Wollongong extends a warm invitation to delegates to attend the Halpern Symposium from the 28 th -30 th of November 2005. A world-class program has been organized covering the latest developments in a range of diverse but interrelated disciplines central to Bert's own research interests including; advanced mass spectrometry (instrumentation and biological and biomedical applications), bioactive compounds, drug design and organic synthesis.

Advances in Mass Spectrometry

Since it was developed as a means to weigh atoms, mass spectrometry has evolved rapidly into a technology that is now central to chemistry and biology.

Professor Bert Halpern was a pioneer of mass spectrometric technology and applications: developing a computer controlled quadrupole mass spectrometer (a technology later adopted by the Finnigan Corporation) and applying GC-MS techniques to screening for inborn metabolic disorders.

In the years following these contributions, mass spectrometers have become smaller and faster and the development of ESI and MALDI ionisation methods has lead to an explosion of applications for mass spectrometry for the analysis of biomolecules. Our exciting program will provide a unique insight into the future of mass spectrometric instrumentation as well as the breadth of new applications of these technologies.

Bioactive Compounds, Drug Design and Organic Synthesis

Bert Halpern began his research life as a natural products chemist. His subsequent research interests included the synthesis of antibiotics; and the resolution and asymmetric synthesis of amino acids, peptides and a range of antibacterials. While at Wollongong he developed methodology to sequence proteins using a combination of simple chemistry and GC-MS, as mentioned above.

We are delighted to present plenaries delivered by significant contributors in the fields of bioactive compounds, drug design and organic synthesis: Tad Molinski (UC Davis), Rainer Herges (Kiel, Germany) and Jonathan Clayden (Manchester).
