Making a Difference: Challenges for Applied Linguistics

Call for Papers

Proposals are invited on the present and future impact of research in Applied Linguistics on the debate and work in a broad range of areas such as education, assessment, social and cultural issues.

Proposals should fall broadly within the conference theme and presentations may be in one of the following modes:

  • 30 minute individual papers for parallel sessions
  • half-day colloquia on proposed topics
  • workshops
  • posters

Individual papers have 20 minutes for presentations and ten minutes for questions. Colloquia papers will be given one half day and will be programmed in parallel slots with the individual papers. A colloquium should have a minimum of four papers.

NSTRUCTIONS FOR ABSTRACT PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION

Please follow these instructions carefully. Abstracts that do not conform to the required format will be returned for reformatting. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is 23rd February 2007.

ABSTRACT PREPARATION

Format and Size

The dimensions of the abstract must not exceed 17 cm wide x 12 cm deep, including the title, authors, and institutional addresses.

The font to be used throughout is 11 point Times New Roman. If the text will not fit within the specified size, please edit it to fit, not using a font size less than 11 point.

Before typing the abstract please set your word processor to the following format:

  • Paper Size:     
A4
  • Margins:    
Top, Bottom, Left and Right set to 2 cm
  • Alignment:  
Title, Author(s)’ names, institutional affiliations should be left-aligned and text of the abstract should be justified.
  • Typeface and Font:  
Times New Roman 11 point single spacing

Components

Abstracts should include a title, author(s) names, institutional affiliations, text of the abstract, programming details and contact details for submitting author. The title should be typed in UPPER CASE and Bold. Author(s) names should be typed immediately below the title and institutional affiliation(s) immediately below authors. There should one line space before the text of the abstract. If you are referring to previous work, it is enough to cite “Author (Date)” in the body of the abstract – it is not necessary to include the full reference details. 

Please note that the overall length of the abstract including title, author(s) and institutional affiliations must not exceed 12 cm.

Leave four line spaces under the abstract and type the following information:

Programming details

Please indicate the preferred mode of presentation, using one of the following types of presentation: Individual Paper, Colloquium on a specific topic/theme,Workshop on a particular issue/problem, Poster.

As a guide for programming, please indicate under which of the following sub-topics your paper should be programmed. You may provide first and second choices.

  • language learning and teaching
  • language testing
  • language policies and planning
  • discourse analysis and pragmatics
  • bilingual education
  • language for specific purposes
  • computer assisted language learning
  • teaching languages (LOTE)
  • Others

Leave one line space under the programming details and type the contact details for submitting author.

Please type the name(s) of the submitting author(s), postal address, telephone, fax and email address.

 ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

The abstract should be saved as a Microsoft Word file with a “.doc” extension. If this is not possible, save as a Rich Text File (.rtf extension).

The file should be named “ALAA07_initialsurname” (e.g. ALAA07_jsmith). If you are submitting a joint paper, name the file after the first author’s name. If you are submitting more than one abstract, please add “-2”, “-3” to subsequent abstracts. Please note that colloquium papers should be collated and submitted by the chair of the colloquium.

Please submit the abstract as an email attachment to alaa_2007@uow.edu.au with the subject line "ALAA07_initialsurname”. Abstracts sent by fax or mail will not be accepted. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is Monday 23rd February 2007.

NOTIFICATION TO AUTHORS

An email will be sent to the submitting author notifying the receipt of the abstract. If such acknowledgement is not received within 5 working days, please contact the conference organisers at alaa_2007@uow.edu.au All abstracts will be peer reviewed. You will be notified of the acceptance of your abstract by Friday 30th March 2007. Abstracts may be given earlier consideration if the acceptance acknowledgement is required for funding and visa applications. Please indicate such a need when submitting your abstract.

Notice of acceptance: Friday 30th March 2007
Early bird registration: Friday 4th May 2007
