TITLE: Environmental and Sustainability Management at Higher Education and Business Schools: The experience in Korea

ABSTRACT

Historically the issue of green and sustainability education has been long discussed for last three decades. More recently, international corporate scandals raise the awareness of green, CSR and sustainability management issues for stakeholders. Are there any contributions from Higher education and business schools? The presentation will briefly review green and sustainability issues at Higher Education and Business Schools in Europe and US contexts. With the details of cases and explanations, the experiences of green MBA programme and related issues in Korea will be presented. The details of cases including the rise and fall of green MBA programme may give some directions and insights for academics in the field of green, corporate social responsibility and sustainability management.

BIOGRAPHY
Professor Ki-Hoon Lee is Professor of sustainability management at Leuphana University, Germany, where he is developing the sustainability management MBA programme, and doing research works between Korea and Germany. He has interests in all areas of Corporate Sustainability Management, but particularly in, corporate social responsibility and stakeholder management, green supply chain management, strategic environmental management, sustainability accounting and reporting, and higher education. He established the first Green MBA programme in Korea and taught the modules of corporate environmental management, corporate sustainability management, corporate social responsibility and stakeholder management, cleaner production and manufacturing, and so on. More recently, he has held a director post of Green MBA programme for three years. At Leuphana university, he taught the modules of corporate sustainability: concepts and tools, corporate social responsibility and strategic management, the integration of the environment into the business practices, the politics of the environment: environmental regulations, environmental policies and corporate environmentalism.

He has also had extensive practical experience of the private sector. In parts of his career, he worked in Environmental Resource Management (ERM) as a research advisor for consulting and research projects, and in KAIST Corporate Research Centre with chief researcher post.

He has acted as advisor to Samsung Electronics Group, Hyundai Motors, National Centre for Cleaner Production, Korea Business Council for Sustainable Development (KBCSD), Ministry of Trade and Industry and Ministry of Environment.

He has also served as a member of the examination board for the National Korea Environmental Management Award. For international activities, he served as a member of the board for the International Personnel Certification Association (IPC), which is one of the two official partners of the International Standard Organization (ISO).

As a journal reviewer, he has served for Journal of Productivity Review, Journal of Corporate Governance and Journal of Environmental Management. As a part of his academic activities, he holds the full membership of EMAN Asia-Pacific and CSEAR in UK.

As a single author, he has written two books – ‘corporate sustainability and the value of corporations’ and ‘corporate social responsibility – strategic management’. The book ‘corporate sustainability and the value of corporations’ won the 2006 award for distinguished academic book from the National Academy of Sciences. There are also a number of book chapters and journal papers which he has published.
