Karin Garrety grew up in Wollongong, and worked as a high school teacher and medical researcher before commencing postgraduate studies in Science and Technology Studies (STS). She received a PhD in STS from the University of New South Wales in 1997. Shortly afterwards, she joined the Steel Management Research Program of the BHP Institute at Wollongong University. Since July 2000, she has been teaching in the School of Management and Marketing.
