About the Marketing Discipline

Marketing and Public Relations are creative, dynamic and exciting fields to study or work within and play key roles in engaging, building and maintaining relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders including consumers, employees, suppliers and governments. Communicating with people is at the very heart of Marketing and Public Relations activity. Discipline members have an international reputation for high quality teaching and research, with students studying a mix of stimulating and practically relevant areas within an enjoyable and supportive environment. Access to authentic tasks via real world organisations and projects underpin the curriculum, aiding understanding while providing a portfolio of skills and experience in preparation for future employment. Importantly, the discipline remains 'future focused', constantly identifying creative new approaches, developments, ideas and technologies to ensure enhanced relevance and applicability of course content for students and their future employers.

The discipline has a priority of establishing a strong network to assist students with their studies and their careers. The discipline is supportive of the student body, 'The M & M Society', and is building on its existing relationship with the Australian Institute of Marketing and other professional institutes, alongside high profile employers who can offer our graduates exciting careers in Marketing or Public Relations. A number of organisations sponsor annual prizes for students studying Marketing including Proctor & Gamble, Tourism Wollongong, Illawarra Regional Information Service, Illawarra Credit Union, Product Development and Management Association of Australia and Tempo Print & Design. The University has an extensive International Student Exchange Program with opportunities for students to study at some of the finest universities in the world throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia. A significant proportion of our graduates have international postings, while others have senior positions with Australian companies, government and not-for-profits. Others have successfully pursued their own business interests. Careers are possible in a wide range of areas such as brand management, advertising, market research, PR, retail, product development, media, corporate social responsibility, corporate communications, global marketing, consulting, customer support and sales.
