(Re) defining the Forensic Accountant:merging practice, research and education
The over-arching theme of the symposium is the role of forensic accounting in facilitating the confidence and security of individuals, private and public sector entities and governments in day-to-day and long-term activities. To this end, the symposium will provide a forum for articulation of views with the objective of promoting collaborative, interdisciplinary research between forensic accounting and legal educators and practitioners, law enforcement, prosecutors, members of the judiciary and others working in this area. The symposium focuses on theory, applications, and practical experiences of practitioners, educators, researchers and members of the judiciary. Topics  include, but are not limited to: consumer protection, identity theft, social security fraud, compliance,assurance and governance issues, money laundering, corruption and bribery.

GUEST SPEAKERS

Mr Ron Durkinis a Senior Managing Director of Durkin Forensic assisting clients with fraud detection, prevention and internal investigation. With more than 30 years experience in public accounting and as a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), he has been responsible for investigating a range of forensic accounting issues including: whitecollar crime; political and public corruption; money laundering; and, organised crime. In honour of his achievements Ron was recently awarded the AICPA Forensic Litigation Services Lifetime Achievement Award. Ron Durkin
Dr Peter Hugheshas more than 35 years experience in internal audit including Director of Internal Audit with the Orange County Internal Audit Department, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the Oregon University System of Higher Education. Dr Hughes has either personally conducted or directly supervised over 1000 investigations into allegations of waste, fraud, defalcations and abuse with several investigations leading to criminal prosecutions and convictions. Peter Hughes
Mr Wayne Lonerganis a distinguished practitioner in corporate and business valuations and loss assessment in Australia and internationally, with over 35 years experience in the field. Having written over 100 technical papers, with publication in leading valuation texts, his expertise extends to public and private companies and government departments. He has served on a range of national and international committees including the Companies and Securities Advisory Committee, the Australian Accounting Standards Board, and the International Financial Reporting Interpretations Committee. RESEARCH FORUM

To foster interdisciplinary research in forensic accounting-related practice and education, the organising committee has designated the third and final day of the Symposium, Tuesday February 14 February, as a forum to discuss and plan collaborative, interdisciplinary research between educators and practitioners. The purpose of the forum is the establishment of a core group drawn from educators, practitioners, industry, law enforcement, government and the community to pursue the formal establishment of a research centre to further meaningful development of the forensic accounting profession.
