Commerce Postgraduate IT Guide
Computer Workstations
The Faculty of Commerce has a standarised computing environment, all computer workstations are part of a 3-year life-cycle plan. All workstations are connected to the printers/photocopiers and internet.
All computer workstation accounts are managed by the Faculty IT Support Unit. All students have User Privileges assigned. Access to your computer is via your student email username and password.
Email Account
All postgraduate research students have an appropriate level of access to communication tools such as the WWW, e-mail, and dial-in access to the University.
User Password Security
Authentication to UoW network is by user name & password. The password is confidential and it is the responsibility of the user to guard their password in the same way they would guard a personal pin number.
- Users must protect their passwords (ie not share).
- Users must prevent their passwords from being copied or overheard.
- Users must prevent their password from being guessed by:
- using words that are not found in the dictionary.
- choosing a password of a minimum of 5 characters & inlcude one numeric character
- Users must not share a password with another user.
- Users must abide by all UoW IT Policies
- Users must change their password if they suspect someone else knows their password.

Contact the Commerce IT Support Unit, should you require additional software installed on your computer to assist with your UOW studies.
Note: the following applications are automatically updated
- virus protection is updated on a daily basis (Monday to Friday)
- crucial patchers as available frmo the Microsoft Update site
Data Backup
Students computer workstations are not "backed-up" via the Commerce or UoW networks, you must ensure that the files under the "My Documents" folder is regularly backed up onto a portable media device (CD using the CD Burner in the computer or via a memory stick. Please consult the Commerce IT Support Unit for any assistance.
Mobile Devices
Laptops & PDA's can only be connected to the University network via wireless connection, students can either consult the Commerce IT Support Unit or visit the UOW Wireless web site.
IT Policies
Computing and network resources are provided for the use of Commerce Research students in support of research studies. All users must abide by the University's IT Policies.
All users must accept full responsibility for using the University's & Faculty of Commerce IT facilities in an honest, ethical and legal manner and with regard to the privacy, rights and sensitivities of other people.
