Prior to, or at the time of applying for postgraduate research student consideration, students should contact either the Postgraduate Research Coordinator within the appropriate School or the Faculty Research Manager. These people can direct you to a number of potential supervisors within your specialization.
You can obtain information regarding the areas of research interest of staff within the Faculty here. You should note that this is a guideline only and other possibilities may be available.
It is then up to the student to meet with these supervisors to discuss the planned area of study, the availability of the staff member(s) to supervise, the interest of the staff member(s) in the area of study and any other issues that may be relevant to the study.
If the potential supervisors are aware of the student and their area of proposed study before the application is submitted, this will help in the application process.
Please note, however, that an email or verbal statement from your proposed supervisor does not constitute, or guarantee that you will receive, an offer of a place in the program. This will come by way of a formal letter of offer from the University of Wollongong.
The Faculty encourages the practice of a supervisory team, including a primary supervisor and a secondary supervisor. Students should ensure that they can establish a strong working relationship with their potential supervisor(s). These relationships are critical to the successful completion of a research project.
