Faculty Internship Programme Celebrated
At a business breakfast in October, the University thanked businesses for their continued support of the Commerce Internship Programme.
‘This is an industry-driven programme that is about innovation,’ said the Dean of Commerce, Prof. Shirley Leitch. ‘It reflects true co-operation between business and education and, significantly, reflects an inherent belief in our students.’
The Commerce Internship Programme has been embraced at a time of economic downturn and its popularity has grown with regional businesses. This year 35 businesses have taken on 80 UOW internship students and the positive industry feedback has been overwhelming. The industry driven programme is academically assessed and has been nominated this year for a Business/Higher Education Round Table (BHERT) award.
‘Word of mouth is driving business interest in the programme,’ said Dr Mike Clements, Director, Commerce Internship Programme. ‘Organisations further a field, such as CSIRO in Canberra and Sutherland Shire Council, are now coming on board.’

On August 20, Professor Rob Castle, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), officially launched a new Australia-first commerce degree which seeks to produce future business leaders with a strong commitment to social and economic well-being.
