Economic and Business History Conference (APEBH), Queensland University
of Technology, Brisbane 16-18 February 2006
The inaugural Asia-Pacific Economic
and Business History Conference was hosted by Gordon Boyce and his
colleagues at the Queensland University of Technology. Professor
Arun Sharma, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) welcomed 49 participants
from across the globe including from the USA, Brazil, England, Scotland,
Norway, Japan, China, Taiwan, New Zealand and Australia. They listened
to 45 papers organized into two parallel sessions. In addition,
Professor Kaoru Sugihara of the University of Osaka delivered the
keynote lecture, the second in the recently established Butlin lecture
series in honour of the late Professor Noel Butlin. His lecture
was entitled, ‘Labour-intensive Industrialisation in Global
History: Japan, East Asia and Beyond’. The conference finished
with a plenary session, which heard presentations from three of
Australia’s leading business archivists.
The
Blackwell conference paper prize, worth $200, was awarded to Mark
Wilson of the Australian National University for his paper entitled:
‘Dual Distribution in Retail Chains: The Case of Tooth &
Co. (1935-65)’

A reception was organised at Old
Government House, official residency to Queensland’s governors
from 1862 to 1909. The conference dinner was held on board a traditional
paddlesteamer riverboat along the Brisbane river. The Economic History
Society of Australia and New Zealand held its Ordinary General Meeting
at the conference. The Society, organisers of the conference, gratefully
acknowledges the assistance of Queensland University of Technology
in hosting the conference and the University of Wollongong in organising
registration. APEBH 2007 is planned for Sydney in February 2007.
