The Bachelor of Commerce
(Dean's Scholars)

The first intake of students into the Dean's Scholars Program in the Faculty of Commerce took place in 2004. The first students graduated from the Dean’s Scholars Program in the Faculty of Commerce in 2005.

The very first Dean's Scholar to graduate, at the July 2005 ceremonies, was Joshua Gray. Annica Rose, Emily Greenwell and Roslyn Sutherland graduated in December 2005.

The Faculty encourages applications from students with outstanding academic records, who will contribute to an atmosphere of collegiality within the program. Most Dean's Scholars enter the program directly from secondary school but a number may also be admitted at the end of their first year of full-time study within the Faculty of Commerce. Students admitted to the program directly from secondary school are required to have a UAI of 93 or above.

The BCom (Dean's Scholars) and BBA (Dean's Scholars) are single degree programs; they are not available to students who wish to undertake a double degree, such as Bachelor of Commerce -- Bachelor of Law.

Students enrolled in the BCom (Dean's Scholars) and BBA (Dean's Scholars) take the same subjects and attend the same lectures and tutorials as students who are enrolled in a BComm or BBA degrees. However, additional seminars and workshops are organised specifically for the scholars to allow them to gain additional knowledge and skills in various areas.  Work experience within the local business community or within the university is also arranged for scholars who wish to participate. Leadership development opportunities are also available.

Other benefits of the program include a book allowance of $500 per year of full-time study and a facility on campus where scholars can engage in individual or group study. The facility is equipped with computers and has a room where students can meet to discuss projects, group assignments, etc. Also, from time to time the Faculty organises special events for our academic 'high achievers'.

Being a Dean's Scholar also involves some responsibilities. To remain in the program, scholars are required to maintain a weighted average mark of 75. This 'distinction average' is a demanding requirement that is met by a small percentage of students in the Faculty of Commerce, including those doing double degrees. Scholars are also expected to participate in the seminars and workshops that are organised as part of their program. On occasion the Dean will call upon the scholars to act as 'ambassadors' for the Faculty, for example by attending meetings with important visitors to the campus.

Students who wish to be considered should:

  1. list BCom (Dean's Scholars) or BBA (Dean's Scholars) at the University of Wollongong among their UAC preferences,  and
  2. apply directly to the Faculty of Commerce using the downloadable application form.

Please note that the two degrees, the Bachelor of Commerce (Dean’s Scholars) at the University of Wollongong and the Bachelor of Commerce  at the University of Wollongong, have different UAC codes and students should treat them as separate entities when recording their UAC preferences. The same applies to the Bachelor of Business Administration (Dean's Scholars) and Bachelor of Business Administration degrees at the University of Wollongong.
