WELCOME TO THE AUGUST EDITION OF COMM-E-NEWS FOR 2008

Comm-E-News is the electronic newsletter sent to undergraduate students each month who are currently enrolled in commerce subjects. The newsletter contains information on events and other Commerce and University information and activities and will also provide information on Scholarships and some positions vacant. The faculty of Commerce is in the process of undertaking its 5 yearly Undergraduate Course Review, and as a student representative on that committee, I will be looking forward to suggestions or comments from Commerce students in relation to the Bachelor of Commerce and the Bachelor of Business Administration. Commerce Central – Opening Hours

During session: Monday to Thursday 9:00am-8:00pm and Fridays 9:00am to 5:00pm. Student Computer Labs – Opening Hours

The Spring 2008 timetable for the Commerce Student Computer Laboratories is available at http://terra.uow.edu.au/studenthelp/pdf/Spring08.pdf.  This information can be used to see when individual laboratories are available for unsupervised access (i.e. No classes are timetabled

Consultation Times Consultation hours for all Commerce Subject Co-ordinators are available on the notice board outside Commerce Central.

Declare Your Major Have you declared your major? Do you know what you are majoring in? Complete the Application form at Commerce Central.

Quality @ Commerce We’re doing things to make Commerce better for you. The Faculty of Commerce is in the process of reviewing a lot of the things we do.  One of the big areas of review is our undergraduate degrees.

We are also working on standardising information being given to you via the Subject Outlines, improving our mid session Exam practices, evaluating the recruitment and coordination of our tutors and supporting a culture of continuous improvement.

Our focus on quality supports the Faculty purpose which is to be the best environment in Australia to research, teach and learn Commerce. Embedding quality in all the function of the Faculty is one way we are working towards achieving this challenge. We are committee to creating better futures for our students and our communities.

As students, you should start to see some of these Quality activities filtering through to your learning environment. We encourage you to tell us what you think and how you feel about things that are happening within Commerce. How do you think we can improve?

Study Abroad in Commerce Central

Autumn 2009 Student Exchange Study Grants available for Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia or South Korea

International Student Exchange Travel Grants ranging from $4,000 to $5,000 are available if you are interested in studying in any of these countries in Autumn 2009.Visit http://www.uow.edu.au/student/exchange/UOW017728.html for more information.

UOW Undergraduate Scholarship for BlueScope Steel.

On an annual basis BlueScope Steel offers a commerce scholarship to a University of Wollongong student. Value of this scholarship is $10,000 and will entail 12 weeks work experience at the Port Kembla Steelworks. Applicants must be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia. Applicants will have successfully completed all first year subjects and the first session of their second year, with an average mark of 70. Interested students will be required to provide the following information in support of their application: A completed Current Student Application Form from Student Central Building 17 or download www.uow.edu.au/about/scholarships/currentforms/ A brief cover letter and resume A copy of your academic records from previous studies A one page outline of how the scholarship will assist studies and career ambitions closing date: Friday, 8th August 2008

UNSW Economics Society – EcoSoc The UNSW Economics Society (EcoSoc) is running an essay competition for students studying Economics at any accredited university in Australia. The competition will be run by EcoSoc in conjunction with the Reserve Bank of Australia. This research essay competition will provide students with the opportunity to develop their analytical, communication and research skills within economics. In addition, it will provide students a chance to demonstrate these skills to industry professionals, and a valuable opportunity to build links between students and their potential future employers.

Careers Service in Commerce Central Appointments with the Careers Service are available at Commerce Central, providing career advice and workshops designed specifically for Commerce students. The Careers Service will be at Commerce Central on Wednesdays 9am-12.30pm and Thursdays 9am -12.30pm.Call 4221 4478 to book an individual appointment with a Careers Adviser.

Student Equity and Diversity Liaison Officer (SEDLO)

The Student Equity and Liaison Officer for Commerce is Ann-Maree Smith. Ann-Maree is located in 40.133 just around from Commerce Central. Ph 4221 4714 or email ams@uow.edu.au

SEDLOs are here to assist students with any problems you may be having that are impacting on your studies. SEDLOS help by offering support, information and referral of students to UOW support services or community resources. SEDLOs offer special support to international students and equity students e.g. indigenous students, students from rural or isolated or low socio economic backgrounds and disability students.

Some examples of problems or issues students have sought help for include:

* Difficulties or poor progress in your studies * Links to where to go to get the best help * Centrelink and income support issues * Accommodation, tenancy and housing * Adjusting to life in Wollongong * Visa questions * Health problems including mental health * UOW administrative procedures * Grievances and appeal support and information * Course progress rules and reducing study load Don’t leave it very late to get help! Your friends may not be the best source of information as they are not the experts on how things work at the university!

Young BizStar 2008 Young BizStar is an annual business competition which gives young, budding entrepreneurs a chance to win a prize pack to help kick-start their business. Categories: Light bulb - for new business ideas; Start-up - for businesses which have been operating for less than a year and Regional - for regionally-based businesses in either the Light bulb or Start-up categories. Finalists pitch their business idea to a panel. The winner of each category wins a business support package worth over $6000 including: Consulting support from NSW Department of State and Regional Development; Capital raising and funding assistance from an Australian Small Scale Offerings Board (ASSOB) consultant; Australia Post Pack Accommodation for regional finalists prior to the final pitching competition in Sydney you must be: Aged 18-35 as at 18 September 2008; have a great, marketable business idea or are in the first year of running your own business and be; a permanent resident of NSW. Congratulations

The Commerce Faculty is pleased to announce that Dr Anne Abraham has won the prestigious Accounting/Finance Lecturer of the Year Award for 2008 through Pearson Education Australia. In 2001, Pearson Education Australia, with the endorsement of the AFAANZ, developed the concept of an award for excellence in teaching as a means of recognition and reward for those displaying innovative approaches to teaching accounting, and as a way of furthering our support and partnership with accounting academics. Anne was presented with a prize of $3000 and a plaque at the AFAANZ Conference Dinner at the Hilton, Sydney on Tuesday 8th July 2008.

Position Vacant Junior Business Analyst BlueScope Steel BlueScope Steel's Sourcing Projects Team has accountability to ensure sourcing initiatives and activities of high impact and profile within the company are prioritised and resourced appropriately. A key focus of the Procurement Sourcing Projects team is to leverage spend and utilise the knowledge and capability across the whole of BlueScope Steel globally for the optimal gain of the organisation. As the Junior Business Analyst you will be providing analytical support to BlueScope Procurement's Strategic initiatives and activities across a diverse range of competitive category markets. These include category items integral to the steel making process and industrial/commercial services.
