Shyam joined the School of Accounting and Finance in February 1998. Shyam has two Ph.Ds. He completed his first Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics from Panjab University, India in 1975 and his second Ph.D. in International Banking and Finance from University of Wollongong in 2010. From 1976 to 1992, Shyam worked with Indian Bank as a Manager where he gained experience in various aspects of bank management and small business finance. Shyam trained the bank’s staff and managers in various aspects of banking.

In 1992, Shyam immigrated to Australia. He completed his M. Admin. from Griffith University in 1997 specialising in Accounting and Finance. Shyam also completed Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting from University of Southern Queensland in 2000.

His research interests are in the areas of interest rate parity, purchasing power parity, foreign exchange risk management, role of trust in banking, international banking and finance, small business finance, banking and technology and banking regulations Shyam’s research on these topics has a focus on Asia Pacific, South Asian and emerging financial markets.

Shyam's current teaching portfolio includes international banking, international financial management, risk and insurance, financial statement analysis, business finance and investments. He has also taught in the areas of financial accounting, management accounting, introductory accounting, business mathematics and crime and transnational financial transactions.
