Commerce Faculty Advisory Board (CFAB)

The Faculty of Commerce has an Advisory Board who provide advice and support to the Faculty. The CFAB comprise prominent business and industry leaders that provide invaluable strategic guidance to the Faculty, in both a course and marketing focus. 

Mr Warwick Shanks
Chair

Warwick commenced employment with KPMG in Sydney in 1991 where he worked for 4 years. After a two year secondment to the KPMG office in St Albans in the UK he joined the Wollongong office in 1996. Warwick was admitted as a partner in 2001. As well as his role with the Commerce faculty, Warwick is also a member of the University’s Community Reference Group, and a member of several other committees and organisations in Wollongong and the surrounding region.

Dr Steve Andersen

Steve founded the precursor of Southern-IML Pathology, where he has worked ever since. Since 1985, he has been closely associated with the University of Wollongong, having undertaken part-time degrees in both the Science and Commerce Faculties. Since 1996, he has been on the Advisory Board of the Faculty of Commerce. He is the immediate past Chair of the Alumni Development Group and is a member of the University Council, (and the current Deputy Chancellor).

Mr Frank Di Giorgio

Frank is a senior executive in the Australian Treasury, responsible for Foreign Investment and Trade Policy. Frank is also a moderator with the Cranlana Programme; a non-partisan, not-for-profit organisation established in 1993 with the broad objective of cultivating wisdom in leadership. Frank holds a Bachelors degree in Economics (Honours) and Psychology from the University of Wollongong and has undertaken postgraduate studies in Classics at the Australian National University.

Mr David Farmer

An accountant by profession, David has 30 years experience in Local Government in New South Wales and Queensland. Born and educated in Wollongong, he initially worked in accounting and strategy roles in the electricity industry and at Wollongong and Cairns City Council’s. David moved to Mudgee Shire in the central west of New South Wales in 1996 as Assistant General Manager, later becoming General Manager. However in 2000 he returned to the tropics when he rejoined Cairns City Council as its CEO. In 2007 he returned to Wollongong City Council as its General Manager.

Mr Dom Figliomeni

Dom was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Port Kembla Port Corporation in 2005. Since commencing with the Port Corporation Dom has been responsible for developing and planning the port for the future. Prior to this appointment Dom was Chief Executive Officer of the Bunbury Port Authority, a position that he held for 12 years. Dom is a director of the Illawarra Business Chamber and the University of Wollongong.

Mr Greg Fisher

Greg is currently employed as the Business Opportunities Manager at WEA Illawarra. Greg has also held senior positions within the Illawarra Business Chamber (IBC) , Wollondilly Shire Council and Wollongong City Council. Greg has had an extensive involvement with the University of Wollongong as a student, a tutor and more recently in his role at the IBC. He has a keen interest in connecting the community with the services and networks the University has to offer. Greg has three qualifications from the University of Wollongong, an undergraduate degree in Education, a Masters Degree in Business Administration and a Masters in Business Coaching.

Professor John Glynn

Professor John Glynn is Executive Dean (Business) and responsible for the strategic direction of  both the Sydney Business School and the Faculty of Commerce at UOW. Professor Glynn has wide international experience in management development programs and executive education. He is an advisor to a number of companies and government agencies, including the National Audit Office (UK), the Australian Audit Office, the NSW Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee and the OECD.

Professor Glynn has particular research interests and expertise in the areas of corporate governance and business ethics, strategy formulation, the management of change, financial management and performance appraisal across all levels of the public and private sectors.

Ms Theresa Hoynes

Theresa commenced her career as a Social Worker and has worked in various roles across the regional health service, moving into senior planning and performance management positions. After 15 years in the health sector, Theresa joined UOW in Policy and Governance and then in the Faculty of Commerce. Theresa has served on various boards for children's services and not-for-profit organisations, as well as numerous committees at UOW. Theresa completed her Masters in 2010.

Ms Kathleen McCormack AM

Kathleen is the Director of CatholicCare (formerly Centacare), the Social Services agency of the Catholic Diocese of Wollongong. Kath is a qualified Community Social worker and graduated with a Masters of Management from the University of Technology, Sydney in 1995. In 2007, Kath received a Member of the Order of Australia as part of the 2007 Australia Day honours list.  She received the award (AM) for service to the community of the Illawarra region through the development and implementation of social welfare services, particularly through CatholicCare.

Ms Rae Mitchell

Rae is currently the Principal of Smith's Hill High School; a co-educational, academically selective high school in central Wollongong. Rae has 40 years of experience as an educator in NSW schools and has worked in co-educational and disadvantaged schools prior to becoming principal at Smith’s Hill High School.  She is a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators and  holds a BA, Dip Ed from Sydney University and a Masters in Education specialising in Gifted Education from the University of Wollongong. Rae has a  long association with the university and has previously served on advisory committees in the faculties of Education and History. Rae is a member of the Board of ITeC and chairs the Illawarra and South East Secondary Principals’ Association.

Ms Dianne Murray

Dianne was appointed in 2006 as Director, TAFE Illawarra Institute. Dianne is experienced in strategic planning, policy setting, systems development, and resource management. Dianne is a member of the Illawarra Business Chamber Board of Directors; member of the Board of Regional Development Australia Illawarra and Deputy Chair of TAFE Directors Australia. In 2010 Dianne was appointed by the Prime Minister to the Critical Skills Investment Fund Advisory Board. Dianne is also a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Australian Institute of Management.

Mr Robert Ryan

Robert was appointed to the University Council by the NSW Minister for Education and Training in 2010. Robert completed his Bachelor of Economics degree at the University of Sydney in 1984 and Master of Commercial Law at Macquarie University in 1996. Mr Ryan is currently the Chief Executive of IMB Ltd and has extensive experience in finance and management at senior executive and board level.

Professor Trevor Spedding

An academic with a truly international background, Professor Spedding joined UOW from the University of Greenwich in Kent, England, having spent most of the 1990s at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. A management specialist, particularly in the engineering and manufacturing sectors, Professor Spedding has also worked as a consultant and conducted short courses for leading companies in Britain, Europe, the United States and Singapore. He was head of the School of Management and Marketing in the Commerce Faculty before assuming the top job at the end of 2009.

Professor Spedding is Dean of Commerce at UOW and his research interests include operations and quality management. Trevor’s research has lead to extensive publications in international journals and conferences and he has consulted for multinational companies and small to medium size enterprises in the UK, Europe, Singapore and Australia.

Mr Roger Summerill OAM

Most of Roger’s working life has been in Broadcasting with experience in Senior Management, Announcing/Presenting, Interviewing, Journalism, Production, Programming, Marketing, Consulting and Teaching in the commercial sector and with the ABC. From 2000 to 2007 Roger was Manager Local Radio NSW for the ABC - managing 702 ABC Sydney and the Local Radio Network in NSW. Roger is President and Chair of the The Illawarra Connection Board, Deputy Chair of Regional Development Australia Illawarra and Chair of The Illawarra Grammar School, Wollongong.

Mr Terry Wylie

Terry joined CFAB in 2010.  With 38 years experience in secondary education, including working in special education, gifted and talented education, and child protection, Terry has more recently taken a particular interest in synergies between universities and high schools.  He has had a close association with UOW since 2000, when he became Principal of Caringbah High School. In that role, he has pursued a number of links with the University.
