CASR's HDR Colloquium Success

HDR colloquium SMM 2009 - large

Semiotics -- the study of meaning making -- and communication-based methods were the subjects of a Colloquium for Higher Degree Research (HDR) students from the Centre for Applied Systems Research. Held on the 24 September 2009, the “Systemics into Applied Systems” Colloquium was intended to provide a supportive environment for MRes and PhD students to exchange information and hold round-table discussions about applying these methods to a diverse range of Commerce-based applications.

In attendance were Dr Matthew Pepper, Mohammed Almansour, Heidi Brown, A/Prof Rodney Clarke, Michael Mehmet, Kristy Wandmaker, Robert Grant, Dr. Jennifer Algie (all pictured above, from left to right) with John James, Prof. Trevor Spedding, Prof. Mary Barrett, Dr Julie Francis, Dr Elias Kyriazis, and Dr Christopher Sykes.

Talks from CASR HDR students covered applications as diverse as Infomediaries for Non-Profit Organisations, Web 2.0 Development Practices, Elicitation for Spatial Data Infrastructures, the structure and function of Complex Hedonic Service Purchasing, Cultural Specificity in E-Commerce Sites, and the analyses of Text-Image Relations on Websites. A capstone lecture explaining the history and application of these methods was given by A/Prof. Rodney Clarke, Director of CASR and the convenor of the Colloquium. In the afternoon, a training session was held for attendees of the Colloquium in a Collaborative Authoring environment called Confluence, hosted by the Social Innovation Network.

Dr Clarke said that “the day started out as a very special one with a major dust storm painting the campus sky red at dawn. Our HDR students had worked hard to deliver some very interesting talks about their research, supported by their supervisory teams. All concerned felt that the day was a major success. CASR will adopt and apply this model to its other research themes in the future”.
