Peer Review
Peer Review of Teaching at UOW
UOW Context
Peer review of teaching has been practised at UOW for many years. Some examples of past and current peer review of teaching models include:
- Peer Review Partnerships are part of the University Learning and Teaching Course Unit 2.
- Academic Services Division and the Graduate School of Medicine have been using versions of peer review of teaching for career progression.
- Some reports for probation/promotion by Heads and referees include a peer review.
- A 2002 UOW project developed some initial models for peer review of teaching.
- UOW is part of the Carrick Priority Project 2006 on external peer review and the Carrick Project 2007-8 on peer review of teaching resources.
The current proposal for formal peer review of teaching at UOW is part of a larger project, the “Mix of Evidence” project. Being able to choose from a range of evidence of teaching in probation/promotion applications will encourage and support UOW academics with differing teaching strengths. This is consistent with UOW’s commitment to offering development opportunities and alternative forms of evaluation for UOW academics:
- University of Wollongong (Academic Staff) Enterprise Agreement 2005.
- Goal 1, Objective 4 of the UOW strategic plan 2008-2010 “High quality teaching – Promote the increased use of evaluation and reflection based on student feedback, self and peer appraisal”.
