Education Strategies Development Fund (ESDF) – 2009 Funding Round

Applications are now being called for the 2009 ESDF funding round. Money from the fund is awarded to projects nominated by academic and general staff, across all UOW Campuses and Education Centres, that promote strategic development of the University’s learning and teaching. The ESDF funding grants provide an ideal opportunity for those who have an excellent idea to improve learning and teaching but require additional resources to accomplish it.

Each year a priority area is targeted for development, determined by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) in consultation with the Excellence, Diversity and Innovation in Teaching Subcommittee (EDITS). This year the priority area for development (through the UOW Priority Project) is Scoping English language support.

Two Categories of Funding for 2009:

1. Minor Projects (between $2,000 and $20,000)

  • innovation in single subjects, or a small group  of subjects;
  • seed funding for innovations with wider applicability in discipline, the institution or the higher education sector. This is an opportunity to explore ideas that may be suitable for Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) funding.

Cross-unit/ Faculty/ program teams are encouraged to apply. In addition, collaboration with colleagues and relevant disciplinary bodies (such as industry organisations) is strongly encouraged.

2. Priority Project (funded to $80,000) is:

Scoping English language support for International and Domestic students

This project arises in response to the recent academic risk assessment exercise by the Strategic Planning Unit that identified English language support as a major area of risk across the university. The project team will conduct a scoping exercise that provides information on how teaching units support English language skill development of their students. The project team will report on needs of different categories of students, identify policy gaps, identify different teaching approaches and available resources across the campuses. In addition, the report will identify staffing roles and professional development needs of those associated with English language support.

The successful proposal will require an interdisciplinary team, a project manager and a small reference group.  The project should reflect literature and practice, and should be evaluated.
