New Peer Review of Teaching Handbook Launched

Peer review of teaching has the potential to advance the quality of learning and teaching nationally, and to drive the pursuit of excellence, scholarship and creativity.

The University of Wollongong has been using peer review of teaching since 1996 in the ULT course and has recently developed a comprehensive formal peer review of teaching project for probation and promotion. Nevertheless peer review of teaching is not commonplace in Australian universities.

An ALTC funded Project involving collaboration between CEDIR (University of Wollongong) and CSHE (The University of Melbourne) has created Peer Review of Teaching in Australian Higher Education: A handbook to support institutions in developing an embedding effective policies and practices, aimed to encourage and support greater participation in peer review of teaching to assist institutions to effectively implement policies and programs of peer review of teaching. The handbook highlights the key considerations associated with peer review of teaching and the role of policies in effectively embedding peer review into academic cultures while describing a variety of programs and approaches. Illustrative case studies and practical guides to program design are provided.

The handbook was officially launched in Melbourne and the free, institution-wide acces to the online version became available on December 1st.

The handbook was written by Dr Kerri-Lee Harris, Dr Kelly Farrell (University of Melbourne), Ms Maureen Bell (University of Wollongong), Prof Marcia Devlin (Deakin University) and Prof Richard James (University of Melbourne).

The launch in Melbourne was attended by 85 staff from 29 Australian universities. Professor John Bushnell (Graduate School of Medicine) was an invited member of the Expert Panel providing input at the launch and Ms Maureen Bell (CEDIR) facilitated workshops.
