Certificate in Global Workplace Practice

Improve your chance of getting a job when you graduate by joining a free program designed specifically for International Students - the Certificate in Global Workplace Practice. This program helps with all the skills and knowledge you need to get a job in Australia with the potential for a work placement at the end of the year.

Register soon to increase your chance of being accepted because in previous years there were more applicants than available places in the program.

CAREERS CENTRAL INTERNS

Our interns, Henry Leung, Amber Yan, Yangxin Hou, Bonnie Dench, Dale Sperring & Erika Vazquez are graduating from their 2009 internship this week.  The interns have produced an annual report.

Careers Central and the campus have benefited throughout the year from their enthusiastic support in job listing – mobile service – and Careers Fairs.  A big 'thank you' to all and best wishes for your future careers.

LUCY

Friday, October 2nd was the final session for the 14 LUCY participants and their mentors. We had a great afternoon listening to their stories and experiences in the world of Law, Management, PR and international trade.  Ms Lynne Wright, Director of Employment Equity & Diversity at UOW responded on behalf of all mentors.

This program is supported by the Office for Women’s Policy, NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet and will be held again in 2010.

UNIVATIVE SUMMER 2010

Develop your employability skills!

Are you interested in getting a step ahead this summer? Using your university education in a real workplace situation?

Employers are increasingly looking for employees who are “work ready” with practical experience. Be part of a voluntary multi-disciplinary team based program that researchs and develops a creative solution to a genuine business problem/issue. In the past these organisations have ranged from the Wollongong Hawks, Illawarra Credit Union, Longboard Brewing Company and many, many more.

Spend a few hours each day (each team makes its own arrangements) and develop your employability skills and gain the work related experiences employers look for.

Univative Illawarra for Summer 2010 will be held during the period from Monday 1 Feb to Friday 19 Feb 2010.

RESUME CHECKING AND MOCK INTERVIEW SERVICE

RESUME CHECKING

When you attend our 'Effective Resume' workshop you are eligible for a complimentary resume check.  Email careers@uow.edu.au with your student number, a brief description of the job you are applying for and enclose your resume.  Don’t forget to get extra assistance from our resource 'The Edge'.  We will return your email within 2-3 working days with our feedback.

MOCK INTERVIEWS

If you are about to have an interview we can assist you with your preparation by running you through a mock interview. Interviews can be for casual, vacation or permanent work. Just make an appointment with a careers counsellor by phoning 4221 3325 or emailing careers@uow.edu.au.

ACT/NSW NAGCAS - 2009 DISABILITY FORUM

Managing Disability at Work: The things you need to know

A joint initiative being run by the University of Sydney, University of Technology Sydney and the National Disability Coordination Officer Program.

Who should come?

Any currently enrolled student with a disability who is about to graduate or is thinking about career pathways.

You may not think of yourself as having a 'disability' but the definition is broad and includes conditions like dyslexia, mental illness, chronic fatigue and any ongoing illness.

The focus is on assisting you to maximise all opportunities whilst still at university, find the best career pathway, and how to access it after graduation. The forum will provide practical strategies and information, the opportunity to network and meet with other students and experts in the field.

Each registrant will receive a 4GB flash drive pre-loaded with *AccessApps* with forum resources. This has over 60 applications providing a range of software solutions to support writing, reading and planning as well as sensory, cognitive and physical difficulties. Lunch will also be provided.
