GRADUATE PROSPECTS STILL STRONG IN MANY INDUSTRIES
In February this year, the organisation which represents the bigger recruiters of graduates (Australian Association of Graduate Employers) surveyed their members on their recruitment intentions into the next 12 months. They "received responses from 141 different employers representing a range of industries in both the private and public sector. 96% of respondents said that they are expecting to recruit graduates during 2009 to join them in 2010. Estimated graduate vacancies for 2010 vary from employer to employer, but in general most employers expect vacancy numbers to be about the same or slightly less than the 2009 intake" (AAGE, April 2009).
Please note that these figures don’t reflect small to medium enterprises - where they might traditionally take on 1 or 2 grads per year. But they also don’t reflect the public sector areas of Teaching and Health where an ageing workforce will continue to drive strong demand for graduates.
