THE EMPLOYABILITY

is on again. Find out what employers want
and the employment prospects for your degree and gain
a chance to win prizes!!

Employability Challenge which is to be held
between the 26th July – 17th August
2007.
TEC is open to all students from
any discipline or faculty.

ACADEMIC CREDIT FOR WORKPLACE EXPERIENCES
Commerce students can now enrol in
'Applied Learning' – COM290 for Spring
2007, where you can work with other students
from the Faculty to solve a real workplace issue for
a local business organisation. Last year this subject
ran for the first time, and students found the experience
incredibly rewarding and felt that they certainly increased
their employment prospects, but also got a much better
sense of how their discipline could be valuable to employers.
For more details go here
or contact Dr Elias
Sanidas from Economics.

HEALTH SCIENCES CAREERS FAIR 2007
The Careers Service will stage its
annual Health Sciences Careers Fair at
the end of this month. A market style environment enables
individual queries and discussions to take place between
students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, and organisations
from the public as well as private health sector. We
encourage all students from the Faculty of Health
& Behavioural Sciences studying
Psychology, Nursing, Health Science, Nutrition/Dietetics,
and Exercise Science to attend.
The Health Sciences Careers Fair 2007
will take place in the foyer of building 41
on Wednesday 25th July 2007 from 10.30am to
1.30pm. Visit http://www.uow.edu.au/careers/assistance/HBS.html
to see who has currently registered and keep on visiting
as we are still encouraging more employers to attend.

VACATION WORK CLOSING
DATES APPROACHING
If 2008 is your final year, you should
consider work experience over the summer holidays.
Many graduate employers who recruit large numbers of
graduates offer ‘Vacation Work’
in December, January and February.
It is a ‘try before you buy’
scenario, as they get to check you out and you get to
check them out, as many of these employers will then
move to make graduate offers for the end of your studies.
Closing dates will vary – but generally
run from June through to October. Some
of the applications close in the next two weeks.
Please check our website at www.uow.edu.au/careers/jobboard/vacation.html
for closing dates.
Graduate Opportunities have produced
the Undergraduate Opportunities Handbook
which has Cadetships, Cooperative Schemes,
Scholarships and Vacation Work. Get your
free copy - available in the Careers
Service office at the end of July - or download it from
their website.
A small tip – when someone says ‘penultimate
year student’ they mean they seek someone in their
second last year.

THE FIRST IN A SERIES
OF CAREER PODCASTS IS NOW AVAILABLE FROM OUR WEBSITE
The first podcast on ‘Alternative Careers
for Psychology Students’ is an interview
with a registered psychologist and gives some good tips
for those who don’t want to pursue a career as
a Clinical Psychologist. The podcast lasts for around
10 minutes and can be downloaded
on to an MP3 player or streamed to your computer.
Other podcasts are planned in the near future including
one on ‘Tough Interview Questions’
such as how to deal with the question ‘Can
you tell us about a time when you have underperformed?’.
Without some thought that question could be deadly and
we are all looking forward to hearing about how to dodge
that bullet.
