NEW CAREERS ADVISER FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF LONDON

A new Careers Adviser from the University of London has joined us for six months.

Jeff Riley is on an exchange with our own Robyn Gleeson who is now working at Royal Holloway College and Birkbeck College, University of London.

Jeff is an experienced careers adviser and has already started seeing UOW students. "I have worked in Australia before." says Jeff, "So I know that there are lots of similarities between the UK and Australian job markets and the kinds of issues students face in navigating their way to a fulfilling career. Looking at the employers lined up for our information sessions I can also see that the employers are often precisely the same ones I work with in London. At the same time there will be lots for me to learn. UOW careers has a great suite of work experience programmes and the IT system backing up the web site has ‘blown my socks off’, to use an English expression. Apart from all that the Lemon gums, the Galahs and the Tim Tams have also made a big impact on me again."

PUTTING KNOWLEDGE TO WORK - IN YOUR FINAL YEAR

Interested in lining up a great graduate job for the end of your studies?

Then read on now, as you start your final year.

More than half of all graduate vacancies will close in April/May - for graduates to start next January/February 2008. Lots of employers - corporate and government organisations, who recruit large numbers, will be looking to raise profile with people like you across all unis through March/April. As they come to campus, try to make the time to meet up with these people – it will assist you trim down the number of applications you make as you refine your decisions about the right role, the right organisation, and the right industry for YOU.

A proactive, professional and open minded approach to finding employment will be a key ingredient to attaining that first graduate position after uni. At the very least you should take full advantage of the array of services, programs and resources that the UOW Careers Service has to offer - all for FREE!

We stage Careers Fairs on campus during the year - where you can meet employers and find out about their organisation and how to apply. The National Fair is 4th April and Illawarra Fair is 9th May. No need to register before attending.

Some employers also conduct Information Sessions on campus. The list here is likely to change throughout the year.

You need to register online!

You can keep track of which employers have closing dates coming up for their graduate recruitment programs.

We offer workshops on finding and applying for work. You can register for these online. Because of the fast approaching closing dates we run many sessions through March, April, and May. Timetables will be available before end of February. Keep on checking the website.

There are some other key resources externally to help you through all of this. Graduate Careers Australia is a website that contains lots and lots of material that you will find useful, as well as linking off to the 2 most key graduate recruitment websites for students - SeekCampus and Graduate Opportunities.

Basically if you bookmark our Careers Service website and the Graduate Careers Australia website you can't go wrong.

We're located on the Lower Ground Floor UniCentre, in the arcade behind the Security office and new Games Room or you can call us on 02 4221 3325.

Have a good year - and please don't underestimate the level of effort you'll need to put into your graduate job seeking activities.

Many students in years before you have likened it to doing another subject - so get ready!
