UNIVATIVE
Students taking part in the ‘Univative’
programme made their final presentations to a panel
of judges of employers and careers staff recently. Teams
of students worked on real business issues submitted
by the environmental consultancy Cardno Forbes
Rigby and Australian Health Management
(AHM), a health insurance business whose national
headquarters are in Wollongong.
The teams working on the Cardno Forbes Rigby
project were asked to make a ‘triple bottom
line’ case for a proposed marina development
on the south coast. The teams were congratulated on
their reports and presentations. One team had even interviewed
people on the street in the locality and the other team
included some telling figures about the likely impact
on local and regional employment.
AHM were concerned to find out how
their services could be marketed to a younger age group
that typically is less concerned with health insurance.
Both teams made a range of suggestions of how AHM
could raise their profile with this age group including
more competitive pricing and a consensus that the current
celebrity endorsing their product – Steve Waugh,
the cricketer – may not be reaching young people.
Both the employers involved were pleased with the team’s
work and expressed an interest in working with the University
and its students again. If you would like to take part
in the next Univative project in February 2008
please look out for the invitation to apply nearer the
time. The Univative
manager in the Careers Service is Sue Rejske.

NEW STAFF
The team at the Careers Service has
been joined by 2 new colleagues – Monika
Lacey and Mardella Bassett.
Monika has an HR background and Mardella has a training
background with a focus on cross cultural support. Both
would be happy to chat to you about settling into the
cultures of a new work setting and are developing new
programs and services to assist students take
advantage of opportunities in Australia and overseas.
