Job Title: Research Assistant - Atmospheric
Job Specification: We are seeking an analytical chemist, environmental scientist, or
chemical engineer to work as part of the Atmosphere and Land Observation and Assessment program. The
program conduct research into the global biochemical cycles of greenhouse gases and related species. The
focus of this position is to take a key role in the operation of the global flask sampling network, which includes
high precision gas analysis; network logistics; instrument calibration; assistance with the implementation of
upgraded analytical techniques, and assistance with the implementation and maintenance of improved methods
for data management and processing.
Essential Skills: A tertiary degree (B.Sc.) in chemistry, science, engineering or related
discipline, preferably with major subjects in the physical sciences (e.g. Atmospheric Science, Chemistry,
Physics, Mathematics or Environmental Science). Demonstrated laboratory experience with analytical
instrumentation such as gas chromatography, infra-red absorption techniques, cavity ring down spectroscopy,
and/or mass spectrometry techniques. Proficiency in MS Office applications. Demonstrated written and verbal
communication skills including the ability to document results and communicate effectively with colleagues and
clients in order to meet project goals and timelines. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively
as part of a team. Proven history of careful and accurate work practices and attention to detail.
Desirable Skills: Previous experience with and knowledge of analytical chemistry,
especially gas chromatography, infra-red absorption techniques, cavity ring down spectroscopy, mass
spectrometry. Demonstrated interest in environmental science. Proficiency in at least one computer
programming language (such as C, C+, IDL, labview ).

within the Environment Group, one of five Science Research Groups operating within the CSIRO Research
Enterprise. CMAR is the largest Business Unit by expenditure and revenue in CSIRO with an annual budget in
excess of $90m and employs over 550 dedicated research and support staff. CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric
Research aims to advance the Australian climate, marine and earth systems science. Our research focuses on
issues affecting Australia and the world, and we provide a range of scientific and consulting services that are
