Job Title: Experience Thailand VolunTour Style
Job Specification: Come to Khao Lak and become immersed in a community that is rebuilding structurally and emotionally after the devastating Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004.
As Tsunami Relief efforts have faded from the front pages of newspapers the world over, the fact remains that there is still a lot of work to be done, particularly in the southwestern province of Phang Nga. Come share in the rebirth of a community as we make a unified effort to rebuild.
What is VolunTourism?
VolunTourism is formally defined as: A seamlessly integrated combination of voluntary service to a destination and the best, traditional elements of travel—arts, culture, geography, history and recreation—in that destination.
But what does this really mean? The purpose of VolunTourism is to mesh the worlds of volunteering and tourism into one ideal in which the participants (both travellers and locals) benefit through immersion. For the travellers, an experience of a lifetime awaits as they will help a community get back on its feet by volunteering five days a week, while learning local customs and staying with locals in their home. For the residents of Phang Nga province, an opportunity to share their story, to work and live alongside volunteers from all over the world and the chance to establish lasting friendships awaits.
What is the Tsunami Volunteer Center?
The Tsunami Volunteer Center is a Thai-led tsunami relief organisation. It was started by the Mirror Foundation, a nongovernmental Thai organization, shortly after the 26 December 2004 disaster. The Center is based near the town of Khao Lak in Phang Nga Province, where Thailand’s highest number of deaths and heaviest damage occurred.
The mission of the Tsunami Volunteer Center is to serve as a partner in the rebuilding of Thailand’s tsunami-affected communities, responding to the local people’s self-defined needs, and to provide the opportunity for volunteers to contribute in this process.
The Tsunami Volunteer Center’s overall purpose is to address the self-defined needs of the surrounding communities. Some of our current projects include construction, education, furniture-making, community income-generating activities and environmental restoration. We will sustain our activities for as long as they are useful.
