Final Year This Year?

Putting knowledge to work - in your final year

Interested in lining up a great graduate job for the end of your studies? Then read on now, as you start your final year.

Most vacancies for graduate programs, which start in January 2009 and are generally with large organisations, will be advertised and promoted between March and May 2008. These programs are run by a range of employers, both corporate and government, who will be looking to raise profile with people like you across all unis in March/April. Closing dates are from mid March to early June (with about 15% closing by late March).

To make sure that you do not miss out on any of these programs which interest you, you need to be on the alert, through this website, from the start of Session.

Note that there will be many graduate vacancies not advertised until second Session, especially in some areas of study, but you can learn a lot from participating in First Session activities.

To help you keep up to date with the latest information, all you have to do really is regularly visit our website (perhaps once a week) and register on My JobAlert, if you haven't already done so. Our website has links to hundreds of other websites and should be seen as the best starting point for all your career needs. Dozens of students before you have told us how helpful this site is:

"I would like to thank you for the assistance given (seminar/class). I think they are useful and do boost confidence" Mastura

"I recently got a full time job from My JobAlert and its working out fantastic. Thanks Uni Careers Service." Belinda

"...You were the most helpful (besides my friends) when I was getting next to no response in some cases. It really made a difference. Originally I didn't think it was appropriate to ask for career advice from UOW as I had graduated, but it turned out the most professional." Lucy - post graduate student

"I just wanted to say a big thank you for providing the 'My JobAlert' service. I graduated last year and subscribed to this service when I left. Recently I returned after working overseas and two days later a job came into my inbox. As soon as I saw it I knew it was the job for me, I applied and got it. I hadn't seen this job advertised anywhere else, so if I hadn't been a subscriber of this service I wouldn't have known about it. So thank you!" Jane

My JobAlert is designed to make sure we can contact you throughout the year if a vacancy or an opportunity comes to us that suits your interests and background. So anytime we find out about something, we send you an email and you can choose to follow it through if you wish. But we cant do this unless you fill in the online form and submit it to us. It will probably take you 5 -7 mins to do. Here's the online form.

A proactive, professional and open minded approach to finding employment will be a key ingredient to attaining that first graduate position after uni. At the very least you should take full advantage of the array of services, programs and resources that the UOW Careers Service has to offer - all for FREE!

We offer workshops on finding and applying for work. You can register for these online. Because of the fast approaching closing dates we run many sessions through March, April, and May.

We stage Careers Fairs on campus during the year - where you can meet employers and find out about their organisation and how to apply. The National Fair is 16th April 2008 and Illawarra Fair is on the 7th of May 2008. Find more information here, but no need to register before attending. Other Careers Fairs take place on and off campus throughout the year (e.g. the UOW Health Sciences Careers Fair in July and the UOW Education Fair in August).

Some employers also conduct Information Sessions on campus. The list here is likely to change throughout the year. You need to register online!

There are some other key resources externally to help you through all of this. Graduate Careers Australia is a website that contains lots and lots of material that you will find useful, as well as linking off to the 2 most key graduate recruitment websites for students - SeekCampus, Graduate Opportunities and CareerOne.

Basically if you bookmark our Careers Service website and the Graduate Careers Australia website you can't go wrong.

We're located on the Lower Ground Floor UniCentre, in the arcade behind the Security office or you can call us on 02 4221 3325.

You should also consider one of the Workplace Learning Programs we have to offer. All focus on you applying your knowledge and discipline to a practical workplace situation, each with a slightly different focus and timeframe. Browse through the following and consider your involvement:

If nothing else PLEASE REGISTER NOW WITH My JobAlert , that way we can keep letting you know what's going on.

Have a good year - and please don't underestimate the level of effort you'll need to put into your graduate job seeking activities. Many students in years before you have likened it to doing another subject - so get ready!
