The Employability Challenge [TEC]

What is TEC?

The Employability Challenge [TEC] is a program designed to enable you to discover the connection between the UOW Graduate Qualities and your employability skills through direct communication with employers and researching your own skill and attribute development from your field of study and discovering how these are interdependent.

How does it work?

A team/s of 6 students will be formed to represent each faculty or discipline area. The 'challenge' will be that each faculty/discipline team will compete against other faculty teams to demonstrate the outputs of their research.

As part of their research each team will need to interview 3 employers to gain information about the employability skills sought by these employers. You will then need to make the connection with this information to the UOW Graduate Qualities as well as the key skills and knowledge you have developed throughout your studies.

Your research will form the basis for a formal report and a presentation to a judging panel. Additionally your team will need to produce a poster presentation to showcase your research outcomes and to display this at the presentation event.

What is the timing?

TEC will run from the 26th July to the 20th August 2007 and conclude with a formal presentation and judging. Your team will have approximately 3 weeks to conduct research and prepare for your presentation. Your estimated commitment would be 3 half days per week to allow for interviews with employers, team meetings and presentation preparation. You would also need to be available for the presentation.

What’s in it for students?

  • The opportunity to liaise with employers from an industry related to your field of study
  • Experience in developing some key employability skills such as teamwork, research, presentation and negotiation.
  • An excellent example of extra curricula activity to include in your resume and to use in your future interviews

How do I get involved?

To be involved in TEC contact Robyn Gleeson in the Careers Service office on 4221 3121 or complete the Application Form --- MS Word Doc download ---and email it to rgleeson@uow.edu.au or drop it in to the Careers Service office.
