  • Develop contacts with potential employers and you could get a job out of it
(you could find a mentor – someone to help you source or support a future career or job)

How it works

There are three methods:

  1. When an employer registers an EEP work experience opportunity, it is advertised on the Careers Service JobBoard.
  2. You can register your interest by completing the form HERE and receive notification of any forthcoming opportunities
  3. You use your initiative to find and arrange a placement and the Careers Service will facilitate the insurance and provide support.

How to apply for EEP opportunities

If you find the perfect EEP for you, email your resume and student number to careers@uow.edu.au. Applications will be submitted to the organisation for consideration. Those applicants shortlisted will be contacted by the organisation.

If you are successful, you MUST complete the Work Experience Form and return it to the Careers Service prior to commencing EEP (processing is approx 2 weeks).

Do you qualify

This is your checklist:

  • you are an enrolled student at UOW
  • you will not be remunerated by the placement organisation
  • the employment experience directly relates to your course of study
  • the placement is undertaken on commercial premises and performed under appropriate supervision
  • you have read and agree with Code of Practice-Practical Placements

You will be insured FREE whilst on your placement under the University’s Public Liability policy.

Periods of Work Experience

  • These are generally indicated in the Job ad
  • 10 working days/80 hours/continuous or intermittent
  • Some organisations may assist in negotiating times to suit your academic program

Conditions

You are not entitled to remuneration whilst undertaking EEP but can receive assistance for travel expenses, if offered.

You will be required to complete an EEP survey following completion of your program.

Testimonials

the students were absolutely awesome” from an EEP employer, August 2004

the project role I was assigned to provided me with many opportunities to directly develop a series of skills related to my discipline while being able to cultivate some useful networks. Such opportunities are rare and limitless in valueLuke Coombes, August 2004 - 3rd yr Management & Legal Studies.

"I have undertaken a number of employment experience programs through EEP that will help me fulfill my goal of becoming a zoologist. 2006" - Kimberly Mangan B.Science-Biological Sciences

"I applied for the work experience position of Legal Compliance Officer within the Illawarra Credit Union as advertised via Careers Service EEP Opportunities. The work experience was to consist of one day per week for 8 weeks, however, after about 5 or 6 weeks I was offered a permanent part time position with the Credit Union. The position mainly involves researching legislative matters applicable to financial institutions and provides me with experience which I consider essential to further develop and maximise my skills and thereby assist me in achieving my personal and career oriented goals." "Work experience is a great opportunity that not nearly enough students take advantage of. We study for our degrees for a minimum of 3 years and no matter how much time we spend studying in the library or listening (and sometimes not listening) to lectures nothing can prepare you for the corporate environment. This is exactly the reason why I decided to undertake work experience. So now on my first day of my graduate position I won't be bombarded with a whole new environment because I've already taken up the great opportunity and familiarised myself with it. Plus it's an added bonus to put on your CV as it shows you have some initiative and did more at Uni than just get a degree." Tian Kelly, final year B.Commerce, July 2007
