Discover Your Employability

Develop your skills and experiences and reflect on them for future jobseeking

There are a wide variety of activities you can get involved in which will help you to: know more about yourself, know more about the workplace; and increase your chances of obtaining employment at the end of your studies. Reflecting on various workplace (and social and community) experiences is critical before you set about applying for jobs. Below are a variety of programs offered through offered through the Careers Service - Univative Illawarra - or staged externally - Vacation Work.

     

Workplace Learning Programs

    Gain experience in the workplace through a period of voluntary work with a local employer. Read more about EEP and register from here.

  • Higher Education Workplace Skills Olympiad - HEWSO

  • Willing and Able Mentoring (WAM) Program

    If you are a student with a disability you might be interested in the WAM program. This program is tailored to link you, your area of study and an appropriate employer in a series of informal 'mentoring' meetings to introduce you to the workplace. The program aims to increase your employability, your options and your potential to find a job when you graduate. How to sign up.

The Employability Challenge (TEC)

  • The Employability Challenge is a faculty team challenge which puts you in touch with employers related to your field of study and enables you to develop some great employability skills. More information about TEC here.

Industrial Experience/Vacation Work

  • Available for students at the end of their 2nd or 3rd year, its a try before you buy experience for both student and employer. With closing dates ranging mid way through the year don't miss out.

Voluntary Work/Work Experience Programs

  • For many students, the stumbling block is work experience within the industry/role you seek. Start researching potential targets now and/or come in and speak to our staff about some strategies to secure work experience. You'll need to have insurance issues covered.

  1. Health Sciences Careers Fair - Mark the 23rd July 2008 in your diaries now! The fair will be held in the Foyer of Building 41 from 10.30am - 1.30pm. Participating organisations will be targeting students from the following areas: Biological Science, Drug and Alcohol Counsellors, Health Sciences, Psychology, Social Work/Sciences, Sociology, Occupational Therapists, Rehabilitation Consultants, Nursing, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Clinical Psychology. Make sure you are there to get first hand information on graduate opportunities within the health industryClick here to see who will be at the fair.

  4. Global Student Entrepreneur Awards - Are you an Undergraduate Student, an Entrepreneur and want your shot at US$100,000? The GSEA Australia program is the premier award competition for undergraduate students that own and run a business while attending university.   5. Fantastic Opportunity for Creative Arts students - The British Council is offering six hot young Australian creatives a once-in-a-lifetime chance to fly to Britain to work with a creative leader in their industry. Realise Your Dream is a professional development award offered to Australians (aged 30 and under) working or studying in the creative industries. Winning candidates will be flown to the UK to work with a mentor and receive $8,000 to help live the dream. Applications close on 31 July 2008.
