Dr Peter Sales

MA (Monash), PhD (La Trobe)

Peter Sales grew up in Melbourne, where he eventually taught in suburban high schools and completed an MA on regional issues at Monash University and a Ph D on the history of Australian-American relations at LaTrobe University. He has held various tertiary appointments and was a Fulbright Scholar in Washington, DC, during 1981.

He is presently a Senior Lecturer in History and Politics at the University of Wollongong, where he has taught various courses in US history since the beginnings of time. Most recently, he has also been a Research Associate of the Universidad ng Pilipinas (University of the Philippines) at the Diliman campus in Metro Manila.

Research interests

Peter's rather eclectic research interests include inter alia:

  • The history of US foreign policy
  • Insurgency and counterinsurgency
  • Aspects of regionalism, especially in relation to ASEAN and Asia-Australia affairs
  • Issues of war and peace in the Philippines and Cambodia
  • The history and politics of seapower
