Welcome

Welcome to the School of Social Sciences, Media and Communication. The School is one of three Schools within the Faculty of Arts and incorporates the following programs:

  • Cultural Studies Program which considers questions of interaction and conversation, text and image, and studies communication industries and communication technologies. It provides a critical analysis of the relations among media, communication and culture and allows students to explore the way in which a cultural studies approach has helped address this complex interaction.
  • Sociology Program which deals with the study of social life, cultural and social change the social causes and consequences of human behaviour. Specific areas of study for sociologists include gender and social class, crime and punishment, race and ethnicity, the family, welfare and education and youth and popular culture.
  • The Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies program, administered through the School and the Faculty of Arts, which endeavours to link broader communication and culture industry analysis to specialization studies in digital communication, journalism, marketing and advertising, and screen studies.

The courses offered by our School contribute to the understanding and solutions to many of contemporary society’s complex issues and problems. A wide range of career and life paths are also facilitated through the skills, research expertise, and knowledge-base gained from our subjects and degrees including: social policy and administration, social activism, media and cultural industry-related positions as well as communication, public relations, advertising- and marketing -related positions. In conjunction with the honours degree, students can also pursue research and academic careers in these disciplines and areas of study.
