Workshop
"Levels of Explanation and Causation"
When: 15-16 October, 2010.
Time: 9:30am
Where: 19:1064
The Philosophy Program will be hosting a workshop on "Levels of Explanation and Causation".
The focus of this workshop will be on questions such as what a level of explanation is, how the appropriate levels for explaining particular phenomena are identified, how causes and explanations at different levels relate to one another, and how arguments about levels of explanation and causation depend on the specific accounts of causation or explanation we adopt.
Speakers are Adrian Currie (ANU), Phil Dowe (University of Queensland), Brian Keeley (Pitzer College), Patrick McGivern (UOW), Richard Menary (UOW), Peter Menzies (Macquarie), and Jonathan Opie (Adelaide).
The workshop will run for the full day on Friday, October 15th, beginning at 9:30am and a half-day on Saturday. All talks will be held in building 19, room 1064. There will also be a workshop dinner Friday night at Baan Krua Thai restaurant in Wollongong.
Registration is free, but there is only room for a limited number of participants. If you are interested in attending, please contact Patrick McGivern at patrickm@uow.edu.au before October 7th. Those who have already expressed interest in attending don’t need to reconfirm.
