Philosophy Program

Studying Philosophy helps us understand the world and the changing social, ethical and epistemological issues faced in science, law, politics and communication. Philosophy at UoW combines traditional areas of philosophical analysis with contemporary issues and offers a wide range of undergraduate subjects under both the Philosophy Major and Philosophy Minor as well as the chance to pursue individual topics in the Bachelor of Arts (Honours).

First and second year subjects include reasoning, media ethics, philosophy of social science, language, mind, European philosophy, environmental and practical ethics and political philosophy. Advanced topics for third year include bioethics, advanced philosophy of mind, philosophy of feminism and advanced theoretical ethics. Philosophy subjects are often taken by students from Medicine, Engineering, Science, Nursing and Law, to develop the critical and analytical skills valued by employers. Whether you major in Philosophy or take subjects under another degree you will learn the value of clarity and reasoning that can greatly increase your career opportunities.

Philosophy researchers are currently engaged in a number of grants and projects that reflect our focus on the ethical implications of social and technological developments. Postgraduate Philosophy students can choose from the Master of Arts - Research or a Doctor of Philosophy, where you will have access to expert supervision, facilities and support.

Philosophy Research

Philosophy research at Wollongong covers both traditional areas of enquiry, as well as the application of philosophical analysis to contemporary issues, with an emphasis on the ethical implications of technological developments. The Program has established international and inter-disciplinary links and can offer expert supervision for Master of Arts - Research and Doctor of Philosophy students in the following areas:
