Frequently Asked Questions

Can I start a language at university?

YES ! There is no assumed knowledge at our first year level so you can take a language at University even if you have not studied it at any level in High School. More than a third of our students are total beginners.

What Languages can I take?

Our Program offers majors in:

Subjects in Mandarin and Indonesian are also offered.

The Modern Languages Program also offers a major in English Language and Linguistics (ELL). Linguistics is the description of how language works and though ELL looks at how English works, the categories of linguistics can be applied to the description of any language.

If I already have a degree and would like to take up a language, what should I do?

University graduates wishing to acquire competence in a language can enrol in a Graduate Diploma in Arts.

Can I major in TWO languages?

Yes, you can. A BA requires 144 Credit Points. A major in French or Italian is either 54 or 66 CP, a major in ELL is 52 or 58 CP, a major in Japanese is between 54 and 82 CP, depending on level of entry and a major in European Studies is 52 CP. Therefore possibilities of doing two majors do exist.

Can I start two languages?

Yes you can but Staff do not recommend students to start two languages at the beginners’ level if they are total beginners in both languages. It may be confusing and would represent a heavy load.

What are my chances of studying in a country where they speak the language I am learning?

The University of Wollongong has an extensive network of exchange agreements with universities all around the world where you can study and have your studies credited towards your degree at Wollongong.

If you have done a major in French, you can also apply for a teaching assistantship in France. Assistants are employed by the French government to provide 12hrs of conversation in English in a a school in France or New Caledonia. Information can be found on the French Embassy webpage.
