War, State and Community (WSC)
War, State and Community (WSC) is a Faculty of Arts research priority area as defined in the Faculty’s Planning and Resource Report (2004/2005). The research grouping is interdisciplinary, involving approaches from history, geography, politics, international relations, historical sociology, and peace and conflict resolution. It involves academic staff and research students in investigations into three main project areas:
These three areas fit within the National Research Priority Number 4 (Safeguarding Australia), as articulated by Department of Education Science and Training (DEST). War, State and Community works to strengthen Australia’s understanding of its place in the region through:
-
Focussed research on the historical connections between war, state development and global order;
-
Analysis of conflict such as terrorism in the Asia Pacific region through research into resistance to state structures, as well as long running disputes over self-determination;
-
Understanding military responses to regional conflict through peacekeeping and other interventions.
The group has organised and run several workshops, conferences and other activities in the past and will be presenting a panel at the Australian Historical Association (AHA) conference in 2005 on ‘War and the State’.
The AHA panel papers will form the basis of an ARC discovery grant in 2006 on the relationship between war and the development of states.
