The Hegemony Research Group is a research strength within the Faculty of Arts. The group is interdisciplinary and consists of postgraduates, staff and research fellows from disciplines such as, sociology, international studies, philosophy, political science, history and cultural studies.
Its aim is to explore the life and work of Antonio Gramsci by giving particular emphasis to his theory of hegemony. Through regular reading groups, workshops and conferences the group seeks to investigate the conceptual complexity of hegemony and show its operation as more than static domination but rather, as process across various politico-social contexts. This unique and innovative approach exposes and develops the regressive as well as, progressive potentials existent within the theory of hegemony.
Key objectives of this research are to investigate:
- Hegemony in theory - this involves close analysis of Gramsci's pre-prison and prison-based writings so as to better understand the meanings and interconnections between key concepts and then extend this knowledge to better understand other theories such as, Marxism, neo-liberalism, masculinities theory and feminism, critical theories, discourse theory and postmarxism.
- Hegemony in operation - this involves exploring hegemony empirically by emphasising the importance of historical contexts on the contemporary politico-social environment so as to better understand future changes in areas such as class, ethnicity, gender, democracy, religion and resistance.
The Hegemony Research Group supports the Gramsci Society (Asia-Pacific).
