Guido Liguori will present his paper, ‘Common Sense and Good Sense in Gramsci' at 12.30 in 19.1003 (Arts Building) at the University of Wollongong on Thursday 15 February.
His seminar paper re-examines these two key terms in Gramsci using the contemporary philological method of inquiry. Liguori demonstrates why and how Gramsci considers the “common sense” or “street wisdom” of the average person inadequate as an understanding of reality. Yet he further indicates the way in which this common sense conceals a “good sense” which is the basis for a liberatory philosophy.
Guido Liguori is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Calabria, Vice-President of the Italian Branch of the International Gramsci Society and editor of Critica Marxista. He is a leading Gramsci scholar and author of several books and dozens of articles on Gramsci’s writings, including Sentieri Gramsciani (2006), Le Parole di Gramsci and Per un Lessico dei Quaderni del Carcere (2004).
He will be introduced by Professor Alastair Davidson.
