Submissions

Alpheus is the electronic journal for Postgraduate research students of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Wollongong. Alpheus intends to promote the diverse range of research conducted by postgraduate students and encourage publication. Manuscripts are invited from research students from the School of English Literatures, Philosophy and Languages; School of History and Politics; School of Social Sciences, Media and Communication; and CAPSTRANS. Space in each edition is limited, so manuscripts that fulfil the following criteria and priorities stand the best chance of publication.

Criteria

It is essential that submissions:

  • have academic approval. This is best done by having the piece (article or review) read and approved by your supervisor(s); where this is problematic, please contact the Editors to make alternative arrangements;
  • be related to your current research thesis;
  • be unpublished elsewhere.

It is desirable that submissions are:

  • a version of an internal conference paper presented at a University of Wollongong Postgraduate conference during the preceding twelve months;
  • a version of a working paper presented at a School (or Research Group) seminar during the preceding twelve months;
  • a version of an external conference paper (and not published in any conference proceedings);

Priority

Publication priority will be based on the ability to meet the above criteria. Where all submitted articles do so, further priority will be given to:

  • those students who have not before published;
  • articles and book reviews that correspond with the Faculty of Arts' research groups.

Book Reviews

Book reviews are also invited from all students. The review should be of a complete book, either by one author or a collection of essays around a theme. It should be a book of recognised academic standard and preferably relate to your thesis or to one of the Faculty's research groups.

What to Submit

Manuscripts and book reviews should be sent to the editors and submitted in two copies; a hardcopy with the required coversheet attached (DOWNLOAD HERE), signed by supervisor(s) or approved academic staff member and an electronic version sent as a word document. Your name should appear on the cover sheet only, not on any page of the actual paper, as it will be sent blind for sub-editing. If your article is accepted for publication, you will be asked to sign a non-exclusive copyright agreement which allows you to seek publication of the same article elsewhere.

Submissions should be between 3 000 to 5 000 words long and book reviews no longer than 1 000 words. Articles should be preceded by a brief abstract of 200 words. Referencing, spelling, and style should follow the appropriate conventions of a students' discipline. When preparing the final version of an article, the editors may ask the author to make some amendments. The editors' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
