Why Study French?
French is a key international language, spoken as a first language in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and the French Caribbean, and as an official language in much of Africa, Asia (Pondichéry, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam), across the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is also one of the two working languages in the United Nations.
Learning a language is the most effective way to learn about a country, its people and their way of living and their culture. The study of French language at the University of Wollongong is closely linked with the study of the French and Francophone cultures. Students have the opportunity to experience them first-hand through either a period of study abroad in France or in New Caledonia, or by working as an English-language assistant.
Students can tailor their studies to meet their needs and interests by studying French as a major or as a minor program. Students can also combine their French studies with that of another language offered in the Faculty of Arts, or a number of other disciplines offered across the university. This enables students to maintain a balance of choice across their degree programme.
Students can begin their French studies from scratch or from the intermediate level. All students are expected to become proficient in all four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing).
Our program places a great importance on the development of graduate qualities vital for future employment opportunities through the integration of transferrable skills into our study program.
If you already have a degree and would like to study French, you can do so through a Graduate Diploma in Arts (Modern Languages).
