European Studies

Why study European Studies?

World's largest trading block ...
The European Union (EU) is the world's biggest trading block with a combined population of 501 million living in its 27 member countries.

... and expanding!
The European Union continues to expand.  In 2007, Bulgaria and Romania joined, and five more countries are currently candidates for membership (Croatia, Iceland, Macedonia, Montenegro and Turkey).

The EU is Australia's largest economic partner:
It outstrips trade with Japan, the USA and ASEAN countries.

A new world currency.
The EU has its own common currency, the EURO, which competes with the US dollar in world markets.

  • Understand the European aspects of Australia's multicultural society
  • Speak a second official language (other than English)
  • Improve your employability
