The European Union (EU) is the world's biggest trading block with a combined population of 372 million living in its 15 member countries.
... And expanding!
The European Union is expanding into Eastern Europe. In 1997 invitations were issued to five more countries and membership will probably be offered to a further five former communist countries taking the membership to 25 countries.
Australia's largest economic partner
It outstrips trade with Japan, the USA and ASEAN countries.
A new world currency?
The EU now has its own common currency, the EURO, which competes with the US dollar in world markets.
